Several years ago, I joined a group of fellow painters in Litchfield, CT. It was a lively group, and well coordinated. Each day we discovered a new area, often on family's farms or homes and in the evening convened for a painter's critique.

Shadowed Front Porch

On one of my vacations, I was passing through Saratoga Springs, New York. I had no idea what a lovely area it was and I ended up staying overnight at a quaint bed and breakfast. As I was leaving, the lighting on the front porch was so dramatic and I had to take a picture... knowing that I would someday paint it.

What is amazing about this painting is that I took this photo about 14 years ago while I was cross-country skiing. I turned behind me and noticed my own ski tracks and then clicked the camera. Today, that photo is chewed thoroughly on the edges by a cat I had back then, but the image and memory is still just as strong.(I love the cool and the warm colors converging together)
